Steamatic’s Secrets to Being Clutter Free

Having a clutter free home is always on a mom's list of things to do by why? Besides the obvious, having company over, wanting to just relax after a hard day at work, etc. clutter also poses an immediate danger in the home.

Excessive clutter can cause injury by falling off shelves for example, and possibly the most dangerous threat being fire. Part of Steamatic’s fire restoration services is also to inform the public of fire safety. Collecting clutter around the house can not only block fire escapes in case of an emergency, but can also cause fire to spread more quickly. The more clutter, the more fire has to catch.

Having a clutter free home is also a relaxing and peaceful environment. An entire family’s happiness can partially come from knowing they have no messes to clean later, and let’s face it, everybody loves the look of a sparkling home.

We have compiled a list of simple tips, tricks, and motivations to get started on your decluttering today!

In the process

  • Step one is to stop procrastinating and just do it! Your home will not declutter itself, it is not going to get done if you do not do it. So, take fifteen minutes out of your day to begin. Use this fifteen minutes for the first three days of your decluttering and then bump it up to half an hour, then fourty five minutes, and so on, until it is complete.
  • Start in the most cluttered area of your home, this way once you are close to finished it will feel like nothing but a chore in the other areas and all the hard work is done.
  • Begin by creating three piles or buckets or whatever you feel most comfortable with, but this will be your system. Label them “Keep, toss, give away” this way if something is still functional you can give it to someone who will get good use out of it.
  • Sort through your things, using a trash bag for any scraps and trash that can be thrown out along with the contents of your “toss” bin.
  • Learn to let go of what you do not need and what you do not use. No, do not keep that men’s razor you bought three years ago. Chances are if you have not used something by now, you will never use it. Toss or give away.
  • Throw out anything useless, such as old newspapers, old magazines, broken stuff, etc. They serve no purpose but collecting dust, and if you are serious about a home clean-up, dust is not something you want around.

Keeping it clean

After your clean up, be sure to keep your home in it’s new condition, unless of course you want to repeat this process again next year.

  • Regulate a “what comes in must go out” rule. If you buy something new, throw something old out.
  • Do not bring new things in to your home unless you have a designated area prepared for it to go in to.
  • Stay on top of anything that can easily accumulate like newspapers and magazines.
  • Each week throw something out, guaranteed some of the things you kept in your clean-up process will not serve much purpose, and it is okay to keep some things as long as on occasion, you look through your storage and rid something else from your home.
