Steamatic’s Drapery and Curtain Care Tips

If you are looking to push off your Steamatic cleaning a little longer, or simply want to learn some home-healthy drapery upkeep habits, then read on for 5 easy curtain care tips!

  • Limit sun exposure. Prolonged exposure to sun is generally destructive for furniture fabrics, drapes, and curtains. Light fabrics are the better choice in sunny rooms since they reflect it and resist fading. Conversely, dark colours tend to absorb light and will fade over time, so keep your richly coloured curtains out of the sun when possible. If you insist on using darker colours, you may want to consider using window tints, blinds, or shades to help protect your favourite fabrics.
  • Shake it off! Taylor Swift must have impeccable curtains in her home. Part of your daily care routine should be to give your curtains and drapes a little shake as you draw them closed in the evening. This simple step helps shake dust and dirty fibers that would otherwise cling to your curtains and accelerate their wear.
  • Monthly vacuum treatment. Attach your vacuum’s soft brush fixture and give a low-suction vacuuming treatment to remove stubborn dust and grime. You will need to be careful of sucking up buttons, trim, or other embellishments. Remove these or tuck them away securely before you start vacuuming.
  • Mind the tag. Sometimes it is necessary to throw your curtains in the washer, but don’t make the mistake of neglecting to check the tag! Many drapes and curtains don’t take well to machine washes. Even those that are washer-friendly should be treated with care – don’t overload the washing machine, and tumble dry on the lowest heat setting possible to avoid any shrinkage.
  • Ironing your curtains. If you absolutely must iron your curtains, you should do so on the reverse side. If you notice any seams that have puckered, you can stretch them gently back to size after giving them a light spray with plain water.
