Wallpaper Cleaning Tips from Steamatic

People assume that wallpaper is difficult to care for, but it is actually not as tedious as some would let you believe. Most of today’s wallpapers are coated with vinyl, are washable and wipe clean very easily, unlike the old school and tradition materials used before, which held dirt and were impossible to clean efficiently.

However, cleaning your wallpaper still requires a bit of a commitment, so take these tips from Steamatic seriously and ensure you are bringing out the beauty in your home.

It’s usually a major job to clean wallpaper. Don’t risk ruining your beautiful wall because of a badly advised website telling you to use inferior or incompatible products with your wallpaper. We’ve got some useful cleaning tips below to help you remove dirt and grime and restore your wallpaper back to it’s original beauty without damaging it in the process.

What Kind of Wallpaper Do You Have?

It is important to cater your cleaning methods to the material of your wallpaper. This is crucial in the cleaning process. Some cleaning solutions are great and effective on some wallpapers, but could completely destroy, or in the very least, not clean another.

Vinyl-Coated Wallpaper

You can use more mild scrubbing tools with vinyl coated wallpaper, but never use abrasive cleanser! This could completely ruin your wallpaper.

Coated Fabric Wallpaper

Coated fabric is quite durable, but will not fare well against ink stains. Be wary of using it in a room where there are children.

Solid Vinyl Wallpaper

We would say that solid vinyl is the easiest to clean and maintain wallpaper available. it is resistant to grease and moisture, preventing major dirty accumulation. It is easily wiped and scrubbed, and there is a lot of freedom in terms of products you can use on it. It is a must in playrooms and children’s’ bedrooms.

Paper Wallpaper

Despite its simplistic beauty, plain paper wallpaper is quite tricky and sometimes annoying to upkeep. It absorbs dirt and moisture instantaneously and shows water stains more than any other type of wall paper.

Waterproof Wallpaper

This type of wallpaper is typically made from vinyl or acrylic. It should ideally be washed with mild cleansers, and never anything abrasive.

Spot Cleaning and Dusting Wallpaper

Dusting is, luckily, pretty easy and straightforward. Use extended dusters for hard to reach areas. After you have dusted, find those pesky fingerprints left behind and spot treat them. This is simple; all you need is a damp dish rag or towel.

General Wallpaper Cleaning

  • You can test out the durability of you wallpaper by test spotting one spot. You should select a spot that is hidden, like one behind a dresser, for this.
  • To make sure your wallpaper stays up and strong for years to come, make sure to wipe with the seams. Usually, this means going up and down, instead of left to right. However, make sure your wallpaper is not horizontal. Do not assume.
  • Completely finish one selection of the wallpaper at a time, ensuring that it is completely washed and dry before moving on.
  • There are products that are especially made as wallpaper cleaners. We suggest you still test them products before putting it all over your wallpaper.

I wanted to let you know what an excellent customer service experience that I had with Ivan Cartagena and his workers. Ivan was extremely professional, communicative and helpful during the whole process (we had flooding in our basement and Steamatic was the company appointed by my insurance company to complete the necessary work). The onsite workers were polite, professional and worked very cleanly and responsibly (our home was always respected and left clean after each time they were onsite). I would not hesitate to recommend Steamatic based on the experience I had.
