Preparing and Restoring – Your Home & Wind Storms
Preparing and Restoring – Your Home & Wind Storms
In Canada, we land in second place for the number of tornadoes that hit us. Any size tornado can cause sufficient damage – they are strong enough to deracinate trees, lift and throw cars around and demolish houses.
Hurricanes have the ability to cause more widespread damage because of their size. Beyond being able to carry destructive winds which can cause structural damage, a hurricanes most destructive effect is causing a storm surge which can in turn result in major flooding.
Some steps you can take around your home to minimize the damages include;
- Do not leave any loose items around the outside of your home. Garbage bins and patio furniture can be swayed easily by winds.
- Trim bushes and cut down dead trees that surround your house to reduce any chances of them falling onto your house.
- Use impact resistant glass to reduce the impact of debris that can shatter glass
- Make sure your garage door is designed to withstand these types of forces. Garages are a weak spot for strong winds and when damaged can allow wind to enter the home and cause mayhem.
- Arrange furniture away from any glass or mirrors that can shatter and allow the storm to pick up pieces of glass.
After a storm, before entering your home be sure to take precautions;
- Stay out of the building if you can smell gasoline
- Examine the outside for damage and take photos for insurance purposes
- Ensure there are no loose power lines and beware of structural damage before entering
- Never use candles or hold an open flame inside the house after a tornado or hurricane
